About „Student“![]()

„Student“ is the oldest existing youth magazine in the Balkan region, founded on 15 March 1937 in Belgrade (in former Yugoslavia older was only „Mladina“ from Slovenia). Having
been published by Student Alliance of Belgrade as an independant monthly with straightforward and upfront presentation of social and political reality of the time, it has been a subject of censorship by Yugoslavian Kingdom authorities.
After the World War II and the socialist revolution, „Student“ was recognized by the State and became public-fonded. During the communist regeeme in Yugoslavia, youth press were rare example of media more-less freed from constraints of the ruling Party and pretty much allowed to criticize overall situation in the country and its political leadership. However, every once in a while authorities intervened and confiscated „Students’ “ releases. In 1968, the European-wide uprise of students’ movements was supported by massive students’ demonstrations in Belgrade. During the demonstrations, „Student“ had a daily edition with production of approximatlly 80.000 copies per diem, out of which some were prohibited. Though it had never lacked oppstructions from the authorities, each edition of the magazine critisized the hipocracy and inconsistancies of Yugoslav communist society.
Its open-minded spirit and sharp criticism was shown again during anti-Milošević demonstrations in 1991, when it was published in tens of thusands of copies. „Student“ was a voice of resistance to official politics and a place where student leaders could issue their comments of the situation at the time. This then led to organized counter-offensive and in 1993 Milošević’s regeeme succeded in which all previous failed – it took control over official students’ organizations and took control over „Student“. This dark period of renowned monthly lasted until October 2000, when the infamous regeeme collapsed under pressure of yet another massive demonstrations.
Nowdays, celebrating seven decades of its exhilarating history, „Student“ continues to be a stronghold of reliable, honest and daring analisys of todays social reality. Besides issues of education and youth, it also coveres topics of society, urban culture and alternative sports. Since November 2006 „Student“ is part of Student Press in Europe (SPINE) network.
Famous publicists and polititians have been publishing their texts in „Student“, such as Boris Tadić (President of Serbia), Svetislav Basara (award winning wrighter and former Ambassador on Cyprus), Dragan Djilas (Minister Coordinator of National Investment Plan), Slobodan Vuksanović (former Minister of Education) and many others. Many of them began their professional career in „Student“ monthly.
